Amazing trip to World Press Photo exhibition in Barcelona

Sara Cusidó.
Last Saturday, a punch of pupils of 4rt ESO and batxillerat of the Sant Gervasi School went to see the World Press Photo exposition in CCCB, Barcelona.

World Press Photo is run as an independent, non-profit organization with its office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where World Press Photo was founded in 1955.

First and foremost, World Press Photo is known for organizing the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Prize winning photographs are assembled into a travelling exhibition that is visited by over two million people in some 45 countries worldwide.

Injustice, anger, sadness, understanding and welfare, were some of the mixed feelings that arose inside of the people that watched the art that was exposed in the large gallery of CCCB. Photos that captivate you and move you where the action took place, and, while you can’t avoid keep watching it, you seem to hear the desperate cries of the people, or the sound of the fire that burns up the cigarette of the soldier.

A really interesting experience that you can recommend to everyone, That when you cross the glass doors that returns you to the street makes you come to the conclusion that maybe we live to live moments that die.

Educative innovation

Andrea Rubio and Lorena Medina.
The main question is: can we change the education now a day, to become it into a better system? Such as the educative department says, it has considered the innovation like one of the motors of change of the educative system and an important element to improve the quality and the progressive adequate to the challenge that the social evolution propose.
An innovative education is that one that affects in what we learn and how we learn, that determinates priorities of the taste to learn, stimulus to think and the effort to understand and helps to wake up the critic sense of the students and the teachers.
The basic objectives of any innovation must be getting better into the school success of all the students. This sounds good, but we have to follow the old structure, that it’s the same, now. Under the law, schooling is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16 years. There are 6 years of compulsory primary education and 4 years of compulsory secondary education. Children are usually 12 when they start secondary school, but some would not have reached their 12th birthday when they move up to high school because of having 12th birthdays which fall in the autumn term. Below the age of 6 years, schooling is optional and provision will depend on what is available in the area where one chooses to live. It is common to send children to school from about the age of 3 years but starting infant’s school at this age is not compulsory. Although the academic year runs from September until June, the children start compulsory schooling in the September of the calendar year in which they are 6 years old. In England and Wales children whose birthdays fall between September and Dec ember are usually the eldest in the class, but in Spain these children could be the youngest. In order to progress from one cycle of education to the next, students in Spanish state schools have to meet teaching and learning objectives, so compulsory schooling could last longer than what is the case in England and Wales where all students progress from one year to the n ext automatically, although there are current proposals to change this rigidity in England, so that high achieving pupils can progress more quickly than they otherwise would.

Poverty

Xavi Sánchez
Four years ago that people were evicted Can Cruz after the municipal technicians says that the farmhouse was not able to live. At that time the town hall offered an apartment to people who lived there, for waiting for the farmhouse was rebuilt, to return them to the farmhouse again. Today have not finished building the house. Xavier Gallecs, manager of the Rural Gallecs said: We hope that this ends; I think it will be for next year.
One of the men, who lived in the house was a shepherd, also had an apartment in Can Borrell, but preferred to build a hut in Gallecs, the neighbourhood where he lives. The neighbours are worried about his health, because is an old man, and the conflicts they had with their roommate that he have in the flat of Can Borrell. According to the president of the AV, Pol Ansó, he said that the roommate changed the door lock of the house, and the shepherd cannot enter at the house.
The councillor of Social Services, Carme Guarro, meets with neighbours to discuss their situation.

Rubbishes in Mollet

Núria Masats and Xavier Vallès
I was arriving to the all town hall, when suddenly I hear the works in Gaieta Vincia. I turn left to arrive to Sant Gervasi School and I realise that the whole street is locked because of the new Mollet’s Rubbishes Project. In this moment I decide to walk throw the Teletuvis Parck to ask in the Town Hall for more information. There I have met Patricia, the receptionist and she has been really attentive to my request.
In the first place, she has explained me what’s happening with the works in the city. The new Urban Plan of our city is considering all the aspects related with the plague and the noise. As other cities like Parets have done, Mollet is including the new types of containers that keep the rubbish buried. By this way, there is not bad smell or dirty zones in the streets. The works are taking a long time and walking through Mollet’s centre is becoming difficult. However, this will be productive for the entire city and no one will remember the locked street when the works will finish!
On the other hand, the most important thing is to know if people recycle even we have new or old containers. Most of people don’t know that less than the 10% of the wastes we recycle are completely correctly separated. Every year, the process of recycle cost between 80 millions of euros, so, we should be conscious of recycling in a correct way. To do it well, we should put out the sticks that plastic bottles have, cut the plastic rings of water bottles and wash completely the inside of the recipe. Do you do it?

To improve the cleanness of Mollet, the city project will include ashtrays on all the rubbishes to prevent people from throwing cigarettes to the floor. Even though, we are responsible of the state of our streets, and it is important that we have a basic concept of citizenship to keep those in good conditions.

A new Skate park dangerous for teenagers

Carla Alcantara and Sara Cusidó
At the end, after the organisation’s disaster on Saturday 14th November, last weekend, on Saturday 21st, the new skate park of Mollet del Vallès was opened. The inauguration was from 11 a.m. and lasted until the night. Skaters, rollers and bikers were waiting for a long time to have a new park more professional than the old one; because of this, the first imprison was good and they were really excited about having it already finished. But, later, they realised that the architectonical structure wasn’t all right. There were small details that have disliked the people that are going to use it. There was a big pyramid in the middle of the park impossible to jump without falling. The fact that the skate park is surrounded by sand makes skaters and rollers think that the new one is a dangerous skate park, because the sand could cover the skate rink; these people share the idea: “Sand is the enemy of skaters”. Skaters and rollers are also angry because the skate park is more dedicated to bikers than to them.
In addition, the skate park, that measures 1200m2, has cost nearly 524.000€; and they think that it’s a really strong inversion. The people that want to use it think that this prize is too much money for what really is the skate park. They also think that the people who have built up it have spent too much money in little and unnecessary things; and of this is made up this large prize. Skaters say the new building isn’t accord with the skate park they were waiting for.
Politicians defend themselves explaining their first idea: “The new skate park was thought to be used by skaters, bikers and rollers, and this is why there are some advantages and disadvantages for all of them”; those are the words that they hide behind to incriminate themselves. But people talk, and they disagree with them, they want changes.
The voice of the teenagers arrived to the politician’s ears, and they tried to satisfy them. During this week they have been correcting some details that people dislike. The tall pyramid has been erased, but the sand still being around the park and it still being a problem.
Finally, the skate park is better than before, and there is lot of people that wants to use it; but the problem isn’t solved yet.

ELDERLY PEOPLE, COMMUNITY CARE

Ainoa Buj and Arianna Martí

“We are people with feelings and minds too”
One day you will grow old and understand what I am saying. Until then please just try and understand that we are people with feelings and minds too and treat us with some consideration.
It’s half six, we are in Mollet, in front of Santa Rosa residence. With us we have Cristina that is the organizer in the center. This center is located in Álvarez de Castro street nº 53 – 57. It’s a public residence with 80 people that can access. It has 22 places used for day center and 58 places acting like a residence, with rooms suitable staff. With her assistants, she organizes all of the activities that the center does for the old people. The service requests lots of things that are much better for them. They assist them in private home, they organize excursions…and the most important thing is that they treat them with the same respect as the other people.
On 2001 0,96% of the population of Mollet were older than 85 years, and the 9,13% were between 65 and 85 years old. They’ve had a life ahead, but ages changes. On 1996 0,72% were older than 85 years and on 1991 the 0,61%. We can observe that the number of elderly increases with years. Tat means that nowadays more than 0,96% of the population of Mollet is more than 85 years old. Most of people don’t have enough money or time to take care of their old parents or grandparents,, in these cases residences for elderly are a helping hand. In these types of centres professional people help our loved parents to eat, take a shower, etc…
Most of old people live in residences, although many people live alone by their own too. What’s more, they have the same habilities to stay alone at home. To conclude, we recommend to elderly community to stay on residences where their lives would be more comfortable and peaceful.

GALLECS

Alba Castilla and Carmen Verdugo.
We all know that Mollet has always had a natural space, Gallecs. With the constitution of the Consortium, has completed the final step to ensure that Gallecs will be a free space of urbanization, which will remain an open space, farmland and recreational area in nature to nearby villages. Those municipalities that have struggled as of Mollet for many years to preserve this area next to the citizens and organizations are pleased to end the historical claim to participate in the management of this place with a great environmental value for the municipalities and their neighbours. The goals that “La Generalitat” and the council of Mollet Del Vallès want to impose in the natural space of Gallecs are: to protect and conserve the land of this territory, to protect and improve ecological values, scenic, agricultural and forestry production, to do an ambient education, etc.

Today, 23rd of November, we have remembered a little bit of history about Gallecs, our natural space.

Today we are in Gallecs, and we have spoken with two Farmers. They are retired, and they are working there since 12 years ago. In their lives, they have grown in an agricultural space, working there. They explained us that if you want to have a piece of ground there, you have to give 240 € approximately and when you no longer want, the council gives you back the money. What they mostly planted are tomatoes, lettuce, in short, vegetables. The crops are for themselves. The time that they expend there is all the free time that they have, more or less two hours per day, but not every day, because they always are with their grandchildren and family.
As you know, Gallecs has his own shop, and we have made two questions to them. The typical products of Gallecs are “mongeta de ganxet”, chickpeas and flour of “espenta”. They are typical, but not made there. We have had a fantastic time doing this article in Gallecs, so, if you haven’t gone there; go, because you’ll be impressed. You only have to see the photo.

Always helping the kids

Sara Reyes and Ester Soley
We take this picture, being conscious that what we want to remark that this school always has care for the kids, in the past and now. The frame of the picture only let us to see them. In the bottom of the picture, there is the reflect but in black. We putted the camera in the floor, so with this we can have a good sight of them, and they are in the floor too. Our eyes go to the kids and in the background there is where they play in the playground and then the houses outside the school. We have altered the picture with photofiltre that is a program similar of Photoshop.

Aperture and ISO

This photo taken by Gala Bertolín shows the effect of using a big aperture and a high ISO. Plenty of light is allowed to come in so the picture is captured with a bright white background and a well focused foreground without any depth of field. That way there is nothing left to distract viewer's attention from the main character.

Small commerce makes a small city?

Laia Llinàs and Laia Casals.

It’s Saturday afternoon. In a city with 52.000 people and most of them spending their Saturday afternoon shopping, the principal rue is empty.
Technology is working against our small city. Even public transport and car make people to leave to do shopping to other big cities on the outskirts with bigger and better shops. Now a day, with 15 minutes you can arrive to Barcelona, the queen of shopping. Bigger shops, better clothes. It’s a vicious circle. As Barcelona is bigger, more people go to buy there. As more people buys there, shops will be bigger. As shops are bigger, more people will go to Barcelona to buy.
Going back to the start, Mollet needs to bet on it. That way, shops will grow and more people will come to buy to our city. As more people come, Mollet will grow more and the vicious circle will start again but this time, behalf of us. But the big dilemma starts here. Who needs to start betting? The council?
We did one survey. We asked to people in Mollet (that lives or works there) about what they think about shopping in our city, where they usually buy their clothes, if they think that there should be a shopping centre in Mollet,…

“I never find what I’m searching” says Arianna Martí, who usually shops in Mollet. “That’s why I need to go to other bigger shops in bigger cities next to our town”. As Mrs. Martí, 20% of the population of our city agrees. Mollet needs bigger shops to have more buyers.
Xavi Vallès, living in for 15 years speaks too. He thinks we don’t need a shopping center. “That would affect a lot the small commerce. What we need are more shops but from different things so we can have variety. Competence is a very important point to make Mollet grow up, as making publicity of the city is.”
On the other side of the desk, Imma, the director from Con-an, sport-clothe shopping thinks quite different. “We don’t need bigger shops, we need more! As more competence, we’ll have more product and more things to offer, so, the public will be able to find what they want!”
In conclusion, as we could see on the survey we did to people in Mollet, about 90% of the population is quite happy with the commerce in the city because of the nice teat of the sellers, the speciality of the shops... but at the same time, they prefer shopping in Barcelona or Sabadell because they “have more variety”. We need more shops, more publicity, and more types of things, variety. Then, it’ll all start working alone. We just need to put the first stone. People will start coming, then, as there will be more buyers, there’ll start being more variety and there’ll start coming more people and vicious circle starts again.
Mollet is a small city but pretty nice one. We can profit it! We need to help to our city to grow and became important, successful and kind to everybody!

WOMEN IN MOLLET

Natàlia Cabezuelo and Anna Careta.

Through the ages, women have always had to fight to be somebody in a world that has always belonged to men... Until now.
Discrimination against women is dissappearing day by day, but it’s still present in our society.
In the past, women could not go school or work, and they had to stay at home takig care of the family and the house.
It’s true that nowadays, men and women can go to school and can work but still it is not the same for men than for women.
For example:
A man and a woman apply for a job, and their curriculums are the same, there’s a great percentage of possibilities that the man is choosed instead of the woman.

Mollet del Vallés had and still has women who are fighting to succed in what they want to be: entrepreneurs, owners of their own business or even mayors.
One of the most succesfull women in Mollet has been the last mayor Mollet had. Montserrat Tura.

Montserrat Tura i Camafreita is a succesful woman born in Mollet who, after acheiving the position of mayor of a little city as Mollet del Vallés, has been accepted to be secretary of the Parliament of Catalonia thanks her merits.

Mrs. Tura was born in 1954 in a pleasant family with a large republican tradition that fought against Franco. She was born in Mollet del Vallès and has been the first woman to become Mayor of Mollet. She followed the tradition of her family by becoming mayor of this small city in 1987: her grandfather and her great-grandfather were also Mayors of Mollet.
Several years later Montserrat left Mollet to become a Member of the Parliament.
Nowadays she is the national secretary of the Party Membership of Catalonia and a member of the National Executive Committee.

Camera position

The positon from which Remei Rico has taken this picture is not the usual position of the viewer passing by this building in our school. This chosen camera position creates a bizarre effect where the red brick building looks like being emerging from a green forest and surrounded by vegetation.

Depth of Field

This photo taken by Andrea Corchero during the last carnestoltes Festival in the school playground conveys to us the atmosphere of the party going on right there. She achieved a nice blur effect on the background by using a big aperture that focus in the main character. That picture was choosen for the frontpage of Xarpants magazine.
